This flexible design means that you can use the adapter part of the GoFlex with any internal SATA hard drive, of both desktop and laptop designs. The drive part of the 4TB GoFlex Desk also works with the adapter from other GoFlex Desk drives. If you want to use it with other connection types, such as eSATA or FireWire, you can purchase additional adapters, which cost around $30 each. It works with both USB 3.0 and previous USB standards. The 4TB GoFlex Desk comes with a USB 3.0 adapter and a standard Mini-USB 3.0 cable. The adapter part has a male SATA connector, and these two parts can be snapped into each other to form the GoFlex external hard drive. At the bottom, the drive's housing has a small opening to reveal the internal hard drive's standard SATA female connector. The hard drive is basically just the internal hard drive housed in a plastic chassis. The drive comes in two parts: the hard drive and the adapter. Other than the new look that has less rounded corners and the 4TB internal drive on the inside, the 4TB GoFlex Desk is very much the same as the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk.

If you can live with 1TB less storage space, it would be a better deal to get the previous version of the drive and a USB 3.0 adapter. If you're looking for a top-capacity external drive that works with both Windows and OS X (without having to be reformatted) and that you can use as a docking station for SATA internal drives, the Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk is a good investment. Expect the street price to soon go down, however. It's also rather expensive, costing more than twice the current price of the previous generation, at $250. Seagate includes paragon software for mac users so that you can natively read and write to the drive, but it seams El crapitan breaks compatibility with the version they included.The drive is designed similarly to its predecessor-it stands up vertically-and can topple easily.
Out of the box, all external drives are formatted as NTFS for use with windows which OSX cannot natively write to. To give you a better idea of what is going on, keep in mind all hard drives are the same. Then click partition or start or whatever, and move your files back.

Once thats done just open up disk utility and select your goflex drive and go to partition, select 1 partition and make sure its a mac osx journaled partition, then click options and GUID and click ok. You NEEED to backup your files first though because they WILL be lost.

However, you will never need software drivers to use the drive with your mac. Just keep in mind if you use this drive with windows computers too, they will need paragon software to work as well so its probably not a great Idea if you are constantly switching between windows and mac. As long as your using a mac, the best way to use an external drive is to format it as hfs+ on GUID. The version seagate included with the freeagent goflex drives is likely outdated by now and incompatible with el crapitan. This is a piece of software that allows you to read and write windows formatted drives on your mac, or vice versa. The first thing you can do is install/upgrade paragon. I had to downgrade back to yosemite due to plugin issues, but I did have it working in El crapitan.ġ.
If your still having issues, I have a freeagent goflex drive and have it working fine.
